I bleached my hair, now what? Essential ways to care for your hair

As we mentioned in our previous article, taking proper care of your bleached hair is important if you want to maintain your new colours and reduce the chances of further damage.

Read on for our tips on how to maintain your coloured hair for as long as possible!

  1. Avoid Heat

Though heat styling is a wonderful way of showing off your new look, using heat on bleached hair regularly isn’t advisable as it worsens the damage done to your hair. We’re talking about blow drying, flat irons, or curling your hair. Instead, try to use other products to style your hair instead of relying on heat every day. Your locks will thank you for it!

2. Don’t Wash Your Hair As Often

Though it may seem unhygienic, this tip goes hand in hand with the point we mentioned above. The less you wash your hair, the less you’ll need to style it. What’s more, not washing your hair leaves in more natural oils which help to protect and nourish your hair. As an alternative, you can always try using dry shampoo to prevent your hair from having that thick and greasy look and feel.

3. Try a Microfiber Towel

Microfiber towels are soft and absorbent, making them the ideal material to protect your dry hair from further breakage. When using these towels, gently press or squeeze your hair with the towel to dry it instead of rubbing it vigorously, as doing the latter will cause damage regardless of the towel’s material.

4. Tie your hair less often

With your hair damaged after an intensive bleaching treatment, one thing you want to avoid at all costs is pulling it too tight. Pulling a ponytail too tight or wearing it to bed can result in breakage around the hairline, or even weaken the section of your hair that’s been tied up. So keep your hair down as much as possible! It’ll also give you the opportunity to show off your gorgeous colours.

5. Regular Touch-Ups are Important

The sad truth is that over time, bleached hair can become dull and brassy, and will eventually lose its shine. What’s more, if you’ve dyed your roots, they are definitely going to need a touch-up when they eventually grow out. In this case, it’s important to make regular trips to the salon to maintain your hair.

6. Homecare

There are lots of products out there which you can purchase to restore strength and repair your bleached hair. Sulfate-free shampoo and other keratin-rich products protect your hair and hydrate its fibres to restore its smooth shine. You can also use purple shampoo or conditioner to avoid having yellow or orange tones. Do be warned that using purple shampoo too much or too soon after colouring might change its colour. Wait at least a week or two before using purple shampoo, then only use it every few washes.
